Mistakes That Are Killing Your Speech and Presentations

If you are a speaker or a presenter, you may have already discovered that just speaking well does not necessarily connect you to your audience. The top three mistakes that hinder your connection include: weak content, not taking action, and weak voice power. Let’s look at this in reverse order.

Mistake No. 3 is not speaking with clarity about your solution.

Are your listeners or clients guessing or picking from a buffet of your services or products. This only confuses your audience and they are wondering why am I listening to you? Avoid generic answers that are too wide; such as “achieving your goals.”

Instead, be more specific. Answer a real problem that is bothering your target group. Reassure them that their problem exists in their hearts, and grab their attention with precise solutions to their concerns. Your clients should not have to guess what your business image or your leadership ideas are. This will only stop your clients from calling you. Clarity is real power!

So create your core message as a brief statement of what you believe and what you intend to do; which will cement the bond between you and your audience. A weak core message causes all your information to disappear quickly from the minds of your audience. So craft your underlying message so that it becomes ingrained in the listeners’ minds as the root of what you do. Keep all your marketing messages in alignment with your value and core statement.

Mistake No. 2 is not taking action to speak in front of other groups.

There’s no advantage in reinventing what has already been done. Try to get to other events that will save you time, money, marketing, and all the organizational work because it’s already been done for you. The more practice you can have speaking in front of as many groups as possible will help you immensely hone your message and your sale.

However, be sure it is a specific group that matches who you are targeting. Otherwise you are just wasting time to speak to groups that are not interested in what you have to offer. It may simply be that you can shape or tailor your message to your audience, but again it must solve what they came to find out about.

Create a plan or a list of groups that would be in sync with your presentation, contact the organizer, and ask how to get invited to speak and be included on their list. This is the fastest way to becoming a speaker and to sell your services.
